i, for certain, couldnt believe my ears at first.. quick background info first: mrs. is a second generation successfully faded jw.

Well you've already dropped the Hassan/BITE references. Maybe be prepared to talk about a specific point on how cults use family ties to control cult members. The family/friend thing was a huge issue for my sister. When she would bring it up, I would ask her questions about how she felt a true friend should act. We talked about unconditional love quite a bit too.

Talk about what types of relationships are of value to her and why. And then give her options outside of JWdom to begin filling that need.

edited: To change "cultivating" to "filling". Ugh hate that word, CULTivating.

How did you break the news to your parents?

so one of the things both me and my wife are faced with is breaking the news that we've stopped going to meetings to our parents.

my wifes parents could go either way, they have made several critical remarks of the wt over the years, while my parents are die hard jw's.

i tossed the idea around of sending a letter or doing a phone call or just not saying anything.. we've decided that were just tired of having to hide our true feelings and play pretend.

I just wanted to affirm what LWT said on page 1.

My bil's stock answer when JWs ask what's going on is "I just don't believe it anymore." This has started more rumors and cult reactions than our response of saying very little. Our goal when leaving, since we were the first, was to try to help get some family out.

Granted my bil (his family became JWs when he was a teen, so he remembered what he'd given up) and sister couldn't care less what the witnesses think. But they have had to contend with more phone calls and shunning than we have because of their outspokeness. And their relationships with our family are more strained.

We have regularly talked my bil out of writing a letter and sending copies to everyone...lol.

I'm very proud of him.

That's a huge step. The very word "cult" is such a scary and off-limits type of word for JWs.

My brother is out!

wonderful news!

my sister in law started attending mass almost two months ago, and stopped bringing their two young children to the kh.

my brother lingered and attempted to bring them back into the fold.

it's a shame this is only in the study edition, so the general public can't see how normal and down-to-earth the witnesses are in how they perceive themselves.... .

After leaving the WTS have you been left with a phobia about being happy?

after reading flipper's thread about steve hassan's latest book it got me thinking about the stuff on phobias he mentions.

apparently cults deliberately instill phobias in you to cut you off from the real world.. we were constantly being told if we were struggling it showed we were doing everything right because the devil only persecutes those that are doing well.

if i ever said to anyone i am thinking of taking up a hobby or doing some exercise or (very rarely) planning a holiday they were instantly critical.

When we first left I would get things twinges of guilt for no reason. It was definitely the cult conditioning of having to be busy and active. It will pass. Recognizing it for the brainwashing that it is is the most important thing.

I don't have lots of time to read and post. So I can't get involved with too much discussion on the board. I actually prefer the topics that are wrapped up neatly within a few paragraphs or posts.

Every blue moon I have time to read the threads that go on endlessly with no resolution.
